How to test Shopify
checkout tracking.

Short answer

To test Shopify checkout tracking, list every pixel in Settings → Customer events, open each platform’s live debugger (Meta Test events, GA4 DebugView), and place one test order. Each platform should receive exactly one purchase with the right value and currency. Repeat after any theme, app or checkout change.

Step by step

  • 1. List your pixels. Settings → Customer events shows app pixels and custom pixels. Note one owner per platform (Meta, Google, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat).
  • 2. Remove old scripts. Tracking code in checkout additional scripts or theme files does not run on the new checkout. Delete it once the app pixel is confirmed working, to avoid duplicates on storefront pages.
  • 3. Open the debuggers. Meta Events Manager → Test events; GA4 Admin → DebugView (with the Google Analytics Debugger extension or debug mode); TikTok Events Manager → Test events.
  • 4. Place a test order. Use a 100% discount code on a cheap product, or Shopify’s Bogus Gateway on a development store.
  • 5. Check each event. Begin checkout, add payment info and purchase should each arrive once, with the order value and currency you expect.
  • 6. Check consent. Repeat from a region that requires cookie consent, once accepting and once declining, to see what your banner allows.
  • 7. Re-test after changes. New apps, theme updates and checkout changes are when tracking most often breaks.

Common questions

Do Shopify checkout scripts still work?

No. Checkout tracking on Shopify now runs through Customer events (web pixels). Old scripts in checkout settings don’t run on the new checkout pages.

How often should I test checkout tracking?

After every app install, theme change or checkout change, and at least once a month. A monitor like PixelPulse watches checkout events continuously and alerts you if they stop.
