GA4 purchase event
not firing on Shopify?

Short answer

If GA4 shows no purchases from Shopify, check that GA4 is connected through the Google & YouTube app (or one Customer events pixel), not through old checkout scripts. Then place a test order and watch Admin → DebugView. Exactly one purchase event should arrive with transaction_id, value and currency.

Check it

  • 1. Find the GA4 connection. In the Google & YouTube app, confirm the GA4 property is connected. In Settings → Customer events, check there isn’t also a custom GA4 or Google Tag Manager pixel sending purchase.
  • 2. Open DebugView. GA4 Admin → DebugView, with debug mode on in your browser.
  • 3. Place a test order. Watch for begin_checkout, add_payment_info and purchase.
  • 4. Check the parameters. purchase needs transaction_id, value and currency to show revenue correctly.
  • 5. Wait for reports. Standard GA4 reports can take 24–48 hours; DebugView and Realtime are immediate.

Common causes

  • Old gtag code in checkout scripts. It doesn’t run on the new checkout.
  • Two GA4 setups. App plus Tag Manager sends purchase twice, or one blocks the other.
  • Missing transaction_id. Without it GA4 can’t deduplicate and revenue looks wrong.
  • Consent mode. Analytics storage denied by the visitor reduces what GA4 records.
  • Wrong property or data stream. Events go to a test property nobody looks at.

Common questions

Why does GA4 show fewer purchases than Shopify?

Blocked browsers, consent choices and duplicate or missing setups are the usual reasons. Server-side forwarding of purchases to GA4 reduces the gap from blocked browsers.

Can I be alerted if GA4 purchase tracking stops?

Yes. PixelPulse watches Shopify checkout events and can forward purchases to GA4 server-side, alerting you when events stop or forwarding fails.
