Meta Pixel not working
on Shopify?

Short answer

If your Meta Pixel isn’t working on Shopify, first check where it is installed. Since Shopify moved checkout tracking to Customer events, a pixel pasted into your theme or old checkout scripts no longer fires on checkout pages. Install Meta through the Facebook & Instagram app (or a Customer events pixel), then confirm a test purchase in Meta Events Manager → Test events.

Check it in 5 minutes

  • 1. See what is installed. In Shopify admin go to Settings → Customer events. You should see the Facebook & Instagram app pixel as Connected. A second Meta custom pixel here, or a Meta snippet in your theme code, usually means duplicate or missing events.
  • 2. Open Meta Events Manager → Test events. Enter your store URL and browse in the window it opens. You should see PageView and ViewContent within a minute.
  • 3. Run a test checkout. Add a product, go through checkout (use a 100% discount code or Shopify’s Bogus Gateway on a dev store). Purchase should appear in Test events.
  • 4. Check Data sharing. In the Facebook & Instagram app settings, the data-sharing level controls whether events are also sent server-side (Conversions API). Server-side sharing catches purchases that browsers block.
  • 5. Compare a day of orders. Shopify orders vs Purchase events in Events Manager for the same day. A gap of more than about 10–20% is worth investigating.

The 6 most common causes

  • Old pixel code in the theme or checkout settings. It no longer runs on checkout pages, so Purchase never fires.
  • Two pixels for the same Meta dataset. Purchases get counted twice or deduplicated badly.
  • Cookie banner consent. Shopify’s customer privacy settings stop marketing pixels until a visitor consents, in regions where consent is required.
  • Ad blockers and browser privacy. Browser-only tracking misses part of your traffic; server-side events fill the gap.
  • Disconnected app or expired permissions. If the Facebook & Instagram app loses its connection, events stop silently.
  • Post-purchase upsell or third-party checkout apps. Some send the buyer through extra pages; check that Purchase still fires once per order.

Common questions

Why does Meta Pixel Helper show my pixel but no purchases?

The pixel can load on storefront pages while checkout events go nowhere. Checkout tracking on Shopify now runs through Customer events, so a pixel installed only in the theme fires on product pages but not on checkout or the thank-you page.

How do I know when Shopify purchase tracking breaks again?

Check Events Manager regularly, or use a monitor. PixelPulse watches Shopify checkout events and alerts you when they stop arriving or when server-side forwarding to Meta fails.

Does Shopify send purchases to Meta server-side?

Yes, through the Facebook & Instagram app’s Conversions API data sharing, when it is turned on.
