Shopify inventory
changed by itself?
Short answer
Shopify inventory doesn’t change by itself: an order, return, app, sales channel, POS sale or staff member changed it. Open the product, pick the variant and click View adjustment history in the Inventory section. The Created by column shows the staff member, app or channel behind each change for the last 180 days. For older changes, use the Inventory adjustment changes report, filtered by app, staff member or reason.
Find the source
- 1. Open the variant. Products → the product → the variant. History is per variant; you can’t see all variants at once.
- 2. Click View adjustment history. “Inventory tracked” must be on. Each row shows the date, the activity and the quantities before and after.
- 3. Read the Created by column. It names the staff member, app or sales channel that made the adjustment.
- 4. Go further back with the report. Analytics → Reports → Inventory adjustment changes can be filtered by SKU, location, staff member, app and reason.
The usual causes
- Inventory or ERP sync apps pushing their own count over Shopify’s, often on a schedule.
- Dropshipping and supplier feeds setting stock to the supplier’s number, including zero.
- Marketplace and sales channels (Amazon, eBay, TikTok Shop) and POS sales reducing stock.
- App reservations holding stock for carts or pre-orders (shown as committed or reserved, not sold).
- Multiple locations: stock transferred between locations or sold from a location you weren’t looking at.
- Staff counts and CSV imports setting absolute numbers instead of adjusting them.
Stop it happening again
- Let one system own stock for each location and switch off inventory sync in the others.
- Check the sync schedule of any app named in Created by; repeated changes at the same minute each hour or day point to it.
- Monitor sudden drops: an alert when a variant drops sharply or hits zero lets you fix it before it stops sales.
Common questions
How far back does Shopify inventory history go?
The adjustment history on a variant covers the last 180 days. Older changes are in the Inventory adjustment changes report.
Why does my Shopify stock go to zero overnight?
Usually a supplier feed or inventory sync app running on a schedule. The Created by column in the variant’s adjustment history shows which one.
Can I get an alert when inventory suddenly drops?
Yes. CatchSync flags stock that suddenly drops or zeroes out within seconds of the update and can restore the last known-good level in one click (email alerts on Starter).
